I have been lucky enough to visit Zions National Park twice. The first time we went was in 2011 with a group of friends. We only had time to do one hike so we decided to do Angel's Landing. Which I would recommend if you aren't scared of heights and want an extreme adventure with a great view at the end. This hike is rated nationally and is a bucket list hike. I didn't make it to the top. I got to the part with the chains and freaked out completely. But even if you get to that part you are still seeing an amazing view and you will quickly see why Zions is one of the most visited national parks.
Another unexpected surprise was all of the caterpillars. It must have been the perfect time of year because they were EVERYWHERE.
The next time we went, we were coming from Bryce National Park and were able to drive through the tunnel. This is tunnel was one of the biggest projects in the national parks and is mind-blowing that they were able to build a tunnel that quickly with the tools they had during that time. This way is a little less populated and you are able to see more wildlife. As we were driving we saw mountain goats off the side of the road. We hiked to the Emerald Pools and than stopped at Zions Brewery to have some lunch and a well-deserved beer.
One hike that is still on my list of to-do's is the Subway, which you need a permit for. I would also love to go and rock climb in the park, but for now I am still oohing and awwing over how beautiful the parts of the park that I have seen are.
What You Want to Know
Take Me There!
I think the cheapest place to stay if you aren't going to camp is St. George, which is only an hour away from Zions. Directions to the park from St. George can be found here. If you have the means and want to stay closer in the park Springdale is another great option. But I can imagine rooms book up fast, so plan ahead.
How long are the hikes?
Angel's Landing is a 5.4 mile out and back trail that has an elevation gain of 1,488 feet and is rated as strenuous. There are two ways to see the Emerald Pools, you can do the upper or lower trails, each is about a mile long out and back. We did the upper pools.
What Do I Wear?!
Depending on the time of year you may need different gear. In the Fall/Spring bring a light jacket and sturdy hiking boots. I wear Ahnu Montara's and love them. They are so comfy and don't feel too heavy. In the summer, it gets very hot and busy. In all honesty, I would advise not traveling in the summer unless you are going to do the subway. Than bring clothes that can get wet and good water shoes. My husband swears by his Keen's. Always wear sunscreen and bring lots of water! If you travel in the winter, there will most likely be snow on the trail so microspikes are a good idea.
Can I bring my dog?
Dogs are not allowed on the trail but can be leashed in the parking areas. If you plan on hiking, please don't bring your furbaby as they will have to wait in the car.
