This week was a little stressful to say the least. Three midterms and a furnace that was on the fritz. It was such a beautiful day, I would have loved to be up further in the mountains. BUT Tanner Dog Park is these furbabies absolute happy place. They love all the dog friends they get to meet. They especially love swimming in the creek along the trail. They do not care if it is freezing cold, Bear is always in the mood for a swim.
Tanner is such a gem in the Salt Lake Valley. It is one of the few areas that give dogs a place to go nuts with each other, OFF-LEASH. It is also convenient for a busy day because it is isn't too far. It is right at the mouth of Parley's Canyon, which is why the technical name for this trail is Parley's Historic Nature Park. But locals call it Tanner Park. It's a great place for those who are still unsure about doing a full-blown hike in the canyon. I would say it isn't the best place to go on a very hot summer day or during the winter when it hasn't snowed in awhile. When you first enter you have to walk down a pretty steep hill and today it was covered in ice.
I may have slipped on the way down... But if you have a set of crampons you would be fine. I was the dummy that thought it would be fine. Thankfully I was able to find a way down that wasn't complete ice.
This is one of the harder times of the year. When it doesn't snow for awhile you start to get a taste of spring. It's so close, but you know it is a few more snowstorms away. Tanner since it is low in the valley is one of those places where you can experience ice and than be walking on dirt a few feet later.
All in all it was an awesome day to just get out and let the dogs do their thing while I enjoy the views.
What You Want to Know
Take Me There!
The parking lot usually gets full very quickly. More likely than not you will end up parking along the street. Dogs are to be kept on leash until they enter past the gates to the trail. I usually enter coming from 2700 East so I don't have to flip around to park on the side of the street that isn't in front of someone's house. But parking is free game.
How long is the hike?
This is a 2 mile loop trail. It goes back so fast when I am trying to keep up with the dogs sometimes we will do it twice.
What Do I Wear?!
There are no special requirements for clothing, other than wear something you wouldn't mind having a dog jump on you in. Sometimes they get too excited or run right past you after they've taken a swim.
Can I bring my dog?
Obviously. ;)
