Seattle...one of the few places that could take me away from Utah. It is such a fun city to explore with an amazing energy and all of the outdoor recreation options you could ever want. But, let's be honest, I am there for the food, more specifically the seafood. We've been to Seattle many times, and fun fact, this is where we got married. It has our hearts and always will be the place we continue to go back to. There are the typical tourist things everyone should do, the Space Needle, Pike's Place Market, the aquarium, and the Museum of Pop Culture. Since we have already done all of those things this post will be more localized to the Fremont area of Seattle.
Fremont is a neighborhood on the otherside of Lake Union, across from Downtown Seattle. One of the most iconic landmarks of this neighborhood is the Fremont Troll. It is a huge sculpture that protects the bridge, visit at your own risk. We were walking around the neighborhood before we headed to Fremont Brewing and added this as a stop. We also went to Archie McPhee Novelty Shop. This had a bunch of wacky toys and odd gifts. The best part was the Rubber Chicken Museum. If you are looking for a fun walk around the area this is a great stop to get something unique.
Our next stop was Fremont Brewing Company. This is one of the best craft breweries in Seattle. They have amazing IPA's and great sours. There were so many dogs at the brewery I was having a hard time controlling myself from just hanging out with them instead of Chris (the hubby). I would highly recommend the Lush IPA. The artwork is beautiful and it has a delicious fruity flavor. There are lots of other great bars as you walk around. If we weren't going to Fremont Oktoberfest later that evening we would have been all over just hitting all the little dive bars, which surprisingly had amazing smelling food!
In Utah, Oktoberfest is held at Snowbird Mountain Resort from August to October. We usually end up going two or three times every season. When we went to Seattle a few years ago we stumbled upon the Fremont Oktoberfest which is set-up more like a festival for just one weekend. When we planned our trip back we paid attention to when this festival was because it is so much fun! There are 4 huge tents with 6 breweries each from around the area, Washington, Oregon, and California. Some have ciders, others are just beer, and some are german style beers to honor Oktoberfest. It is a huge party and always a good time. They seem to hold it the same time every year around September 20th. If you are every in Seattle during that time GO!
Now let's start talking food. On the way home from Oktoberfest, I wanted to treat myself to some birthday cake. We found this amazing place called Simply Desserts. It is a cute little dessert shop that serves coffee and cake. The best part is they are open until 11:30pm, the worst part is they only take cash, so be prepared. But it is so worth it. I got the cake with as much chocolate as possible. Yes, yes, and YAASS!
We are always on the hunt for good sushi. After an intense googling session for the best sushi in Seattle for a reasonable price with a happy hour, very specific criteria, we finally decided on Japonessa Sushi Cocina. I have to be 100% honest, we are very spoiled in Salt Lake, we are friends with a sushi chef. This makes it really hard to not compare everything to his rolls. Overall, this place was decent. Chris loved the sashimi, what you see in the photo. I am not as big of a fan, I tend to go for sushi rolls. It has a great atmosphere and a fun menu but I think they could have a little more flavor in their rolls. That is my only complaint. Other than that, I thought it was reasonably priced and everyone was super nice.
The next absolute must have food was oysters. This was our splurge meal. Elliott's Oyster House is not cheap. But it is worth every penny. We went during happy hour so we could get the best deal on oysters as an appetizer and then we got crab and steak for dinner. Everything was delicious. It was a beautiful place and right on the pier. It is very close to the aquarium and Pike's Market, if you are in the area I would highly recommend this place.
After dinner we weren't done celebrating my birthday. I saw a little brewery on the way to dinner and we decided to go and check it out. Cloudburst Brewing was a tiny little place with delicious IPA's. That is all they had on the menu, so if you aren't an IPA fan, I would skip this place. We thought it was great and seemed to be a brand new brewery. Next, we went to the Taproom at Pike Place. They have a huge selection of beer and great bar food. However, I had my eye on ice cream right next door, which was our final stop for the night. Shug's Soda Fountain and Ice Cream is everything you could want in an ice cream parlor. Super cute decor and delicious ice cream. We didn't try a soda, but I got a scoop chocolate ice cream with a scoop of coffee ice cream. My favorite combo. It was the perfect way to end the night.
Seattle has an amazing Chinatown area with delicious food. We had to get dim sum for breakfast our last day there. Harbor City Restaurant was delicious and did not disappoint in anyway. If you would like to try some great food, this place needs to be added to your list.
Seattle is all what you make it. It can be a total outdoor adventure or you can spend it exploring the city, or do both! We have gone to Mt. Rainier National Park and San Juan Islands as quick day trips from Seattle and they were both breathtaking and so fun. Each of those links will take you to my blog posts about those areas for more ideas of how you can customize your Pacific Northwest adventure!
