Richmond was the last stop on my east coast trip, we took a train from NYC to DC and rented a car in DC to drive down to Richmond. I didn't have a ton of time to explore because I was there for a conference. But I did squeeze in some time to eat delicious seafood and visit a few places. I had never eaten fresh crab before and it was mouth-watering.
We explored another botanical garden in Richmond. This one had a butterfly exhibit and I had a very colorful shirt on and a sweet smelling perfume so they butterflies loved me and would land on my fingers and my shirt. This is now my new trick. You cannot touch them unless they land on you. I had to be careful not to touch their wings, but I love holding butterflies and seeing the beautiful patterns on their wings.
Next, we explored an old railroad families estate, Maymont. I had never seen anything like this before in my life. Including, seeing how people who were enslaved were forced to live. Needless to say this trip was full of ups and downs. I enjoyed so much of it, but this was definitely the ugly side of our history. The estate, regardless of the the nastiness of the time, was beautiful. They had a stained glass window made by Tiffany's and a grand piano whose underside was a custom painting that could have been hung in a museum.
Last, we explored Richmond Capital and City Hall. This was a beautiful building as well. It was left to represent how it was when it was first built, which was an awesome contrast from DC that seemed like it was constantly being updated and modernized. Richmond is an interesting place. I had a great time but was missing the mountains surrounding me and it was time to go home and find the next adventure!
