Red Butte Canyon

Updated: May 17, 2019

This is a maze of a trail. We started off aiming for The Living Room, but I could not remember where the turn was. So we ended up hiking into Red Butte Canyon, which was just as fun. This place is a dream if you just want to go wherever the trail takes you. It is very steep because you are going straight up into the canyon. But the steeper the climb, the prettier the views. Even though it wasn’t a clear sky, we still enjoyed watching the sunset and looking at our beautiful city.

This highly trafficked trail is great for all seasons and is dog friendly. If you are hiking in the snow, I would highly recommend mircrospikes. It is extremely steep and would be hard to trudge up without some traction. In the spring beware of the mud, but for the most part it wasn’t too bad. In the summer there is minimal shade, so I would recommend avoiding it on a hot day. My favorite time to do this hike is in the fall. It is perfect temperature in the morning and an awesome way to soak up some sun before the winter months.

What You Want to Know

Take Me There!

Trailhead parking is on Colorow Road. From Foothill Drive turn onto Wakara Way drive all the way up until you see Colorow Road, follow the road until you see a parking lot to the south. This is where you park. It would be rare for you to not see other cars parked there as well.

How long is the hike?

If you would like to hike The Living Room, that trail is 2.2 miles out and back with a 967 elevation gain. The Red Butte Canyon trail is a 4.3 mile loop trail that has a 1,666 elevation gain.

What Do I Wear?!

These trails have very little shade, so plenty of sunscreen and water. I wore Nikes and regretted it. If you are hiking The Living Room trail I don't think you need full on hiking shoes, but something with good traction is recommended for the steep areas.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes! Dogs are allowed on the trail.
