Miller Nature Park

Updated: May 17, 2019

Miller Bird Refuge and Nature Park is a hidden gem in Sugarhouse. It is part of an effort to restore the 7 creeks that run from the canyons through Salt Lake City. Most of them are buried under the city and pop-up in certain areas. There are many organizations like the Seven Canyons Trust that are working to get more of the creeks uncovered and restored to their natural flow and allow the wildlife and plants to once again thrive around them. Miller Park is a great example of how that could look throughout our city.

I love walking a trail and hearing a creek flowing. It is the most calming sound. Most of the time I walk with my headphones in, but today I wanted to hear the crunch of the snow and the sound of water. The trail was super muddy because of how wet it was, but as you can see that didn't stop my dogs from throughly enjoying themselves. I learned about this area from friends who lived in the neighborhood and have used it as a photoshoot location more than once. There are stone benches and beautiful bridges along the trail.

What You Want to Know

Take Me There!

Red Butte Creek, Salt Lake City, Utah 84105 is the official google address if you need to use GPS. But it is pretty simple. If you are familiar with East High School it is east of that. From 1300 East and 900 South turn right and head through the neighborhood until you reach Diestel Road. Just past that street on the right you will see a fenced area with a Miller Nature Park sign, park here and walk down the stone steps onto the trail.

How long is the hike?

It is a 2.1 mile loop.

What Do I Wear?!

I hiked this after a snow storm and was able to do it with just some snow boots. I wear Under Armour Valsetz tactical boots. If you hike it any other time of year any shoes would be fine. This is a very easy and well-maintained trail. It would all depend on the weather that day and what you are most comfortable in.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes! They technically need to be on a leash, but I was able to let mine off and saw a few others do the same. As long as they are well-behaved you'll be fine. They do have trash cans and dog waste bags, please keep this area clean.
