Que the Will Smith song...
Welcome to Miami,
Bienvenidos a Miami!
I had to go to a conference in Miami when I worked for the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Utah. I know, it's the worst! What an awful place for a conference. Obviously, I was stoked. This was my first time in Florida and Miami did not disappoint. This city is so vibrant and the energy is high. In between conference activities we were determined to explore as much of Miami as we could. It's difficult and 10 minute power naps are a must to survive meetings, but I made it.
We walked to the Bayside Marketplace right on the beach. This was a good one-stop shop for souvenirs and to explore the city from our hotel. Even though the conference kept us full and satisfied food wise, we still had to go try other restaurants. For me it was sushi every night. I don't think you can go wrong anywhere in Miami getting sushi, especially when you don't live on a coast.
The nightlife is so much fun. Dancing everywhere! We went to a bar with a live band. It was a blast to watch everyone dance. I also learned I have a thing for architecture. One of the biggest things I remember about Miami is that the architecture is so colorful and modern, and I was obsessed with look at all of it.
Last but not least, I knew that the Miami Seaquarium had an orca. After watching Blackfish, I was not excited about the idea of an orca being held in captivity. But I did wanted to see one up close. Unfortunately, this did not pan out well. The tank was so incredibly small I started to cry. It is hard to see an animal so magnificent with no where to swim or a family to keep her company. Dolphins were in the tank with her, but it's not the same as having your pod with you. I will never visit a place that has orcas in captivity again. It was too hard.
I don't want to end on a sad note. Overall, this trip was amazing. It gave me confidence in my career and another solo trip under my belt.
