Bonneville Shoreline - Emigration Canyon Section

Updated: May 17, 2019

I used to work at Camp K, up Emigration Canyon and would look at these trails every day as I drove to work. The Bonneville Shoreline Emigration Canyon section is beautiful and super accessible. 12 years of starring at the trails I am finally exploring the area, and of course I brought Bear and Daisy along.

It was pretty much what I expected. A fair warning, there were so many twists and turns in the trail system. Technically the Bonneville Shoreline Trail goes around the whole valley, and is where the Bonneville Lake used to sit at. Fun fact, at one point our whole valley was underwater. I love viewing the city, especially on a clear air day, but the blue skies were calling me to explore further into the canyon. So I took the trails that would lead me into the mountains. As they say, the mountains are calling and I must go...

Amazingly, I ended up on the peaks of the mountains that are right at the entrance of Emigration Canyon. Something I also always told myself I would love to explore. I was so stoked and had the best time soaking in the blue skies and playing in the snow. The dogs were also digging on the vibes for the day. They love to out run me up a mountain, and I love watching them.

What You Want to Know

Take Me There!

Trailhead parking is right across the street from Hogle Zoo and right before you would drive up Emigration Canyon.

How long is the hike?

Much like the rest of the Bonneville Shoreline this can be as long or as short as you'd like. You can hike to the top of Mount Wire from this trailhead in 3.6 miles. I hiked further into Emigration Canyon and to the top of a few hills that I found. I did not come back down on the same trail it was a little confusing, but I was able to find my way back to the trailhead using familiar landmarks I had seen on the way up. Don't be afraid to explore!

What Do I Wear?!

This hike can get pretty steep, so I went for my Under Armour Tactical boots. During the summer I would go with my Ahnu Montara's. Bring plenty of water, even if you are hiking in the winter. You still need to stay hydrated.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes! Dogs are allowed on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and in Emigration Canyon.
