Bonneville Shoreline - City Creek Section

Updated: May 17, 2019

After Memory Grove and getting to the end of that trail, seeing that there were even MORE trails, I had to go and check it out. I had planned on doing this hike on Sunday but it decided to rain/snow all day. Thankfully, Monday was the first day of 60 degree weather and sunshine. I wasn't the only one getting out on the trail. This is a very busy area of the Bonneville Shoreline. It is super close to the Avenues and Capital Hill neighborhoods. What was super fun about it is there were TONS of dogs to smile at as they were living their best lives running around on the trail.

This hike starts with some intense switchbacks as you climb to the top. But once you get there it's a hidden world. There is a bike park for those extreme riders, the "I Street Bike Park". If I were a biker this would be heaven.

The trails go every which way, you just have to decided what you are in the mood for. You can climb to the top of one of the hills for a better view and intense workout, trail run with your dogs, or you can mountain bike to your hearts content. It is also a great area to get ideas of what you might like to try next by watching what others are doing. I think this would be a great trail to start mountain biking on or to try out trail running. It is well-maintained and is not super intense as far as incline goes.

I had originally planned on going back into City Creek Canyon, but the Bonneville Shoreline trail no longer allows you to connect these sections. It is closed off for re-vegetation work. So next time I am in the area instead of heading for the trail to the east, I will take the trail to the west. However, I loved exploring another section of the Bonneville Shoreline, soaking in the sun, and seeing green finally popping up on the hillsides!

What You Want to Know

Take Me There!

Trailhead parking is at the end of Bonneville Boulevard, right before the road turns around to head back down to the valley. There are two trailhead starts by this parking area. The trailhead to the right is the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and the one of the left is the City Creek Canyon trailhead.

How long is the hike?

It is a 6 mile out and back trail with 656 feet of elevation gain. I ended up doing about 2 miles on the Bonneville Shoreline. That is more of a hike until you want to turn back deal since it stretches across the entire valley.

What Do I Wear?!

I wore my Ahnu Montara boots. I wasn't sure what the condition of the trail would be after not being used for biking for awhile. It was a little uneven, but for the most part pretty mellow.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are not allowed in City Creek Canyon. It is a watershed area. But they are allowed along the Bonneville Shoreline trails. There were so many dogs running around loving life. I was so bummed I didn't stop to pick mine up.
